A mobile truck and customised container was designed by the SETS team. The truck is an awareness and mobile training unit and is equipped with renewable energy equipment, having a 2.5kW photovoltaic system on its roof. The truck is also equipped with a 600 kW wind turbine, a biogas digester, an energy efficiency booth and various other renewable energy demonstration units. The energyDRIVE truck is the ‘first of its kind’ in Africa and takes the form of a roadshow, which promotes, advances and develops public awareness of alternative energy and energy efficiency. It has visited about 200 rural schools, educating over 100 000 scholars with renewable energy demonstrations; 30 exhibitions and careers expos reaching about 75 000 public, private, conference delegates and energy and environment colleagues.
The success of the project is evidenced by the numerous awards and articles in various well-known media platforms. The project has received many prestigious awards, viz:
- Energy Globe Award (2019), which was received from an international organisation for the best national project focusing on energy efficiency and renewable energy and its influence on the youth in a country.
- National Energy Education Award (2018), received from the South African National Energy Association (SANEA). This award was received for the impact that the energyDRIVE community engagement project had on the youth in our country
